Junior Sailing At MHYCMHYC Junior Centreboard Division

Incorporating the 'Learn to Sail' and Junior Racing Programs

MHYC has a proud tradition of developing young sailors, culminating in the success of Nathan Wilmot and Malcolm Page winning Gold in the 470 Mens at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Junior Learn to Sail Program

Optimists - 7 - 12 year olds

MHYC Learn to sail program  utilises the Club’s poly Optimist dinghy’s.  The Program caters for children aged 7-12.

Term 1 - 2010 - Has Started!!

Sunday 7th February - Sunday 28th March
Tackers One - 8.30am - 10:30am (arrive at 8:15am to setup boats)
Tackers Two/Three - 11.00 - 1pm

Conducted on Sunday mornings at MHYC using the club owned Poly Optimists, your kids will complete the Tackers - Learn to sail program endorsed by Yachting Australia.

This Season MHYC is offering learn to sail courses for beginner through to the advanced sailor.

 To book a place please down load the the Learn to Sail Enrolment Form and return it to the MHYC Office attentioned Junior Administrator.

 RS Feva - 13 - 17 year old

 MHYC Is also in the process of finalising plans for the Learn to sail - RS Feva for 13 - 17 year olds.

Final plans will be confirmed in the coming weeks and will be available on the website when completed.

MHYC Squad Development Programnew

MHYC also has a squad development program which forms the link between learning to sail and increasing the skills for competitive racing. There will be 2 different squads catering for the the 2 boats as follows;

  • Optimists (Green Fleet) - Term 1 2010- 8 Weeks! -11am - 1pm
  • Feva

A dedicated coach will be assisgned to each group to hone the race skills of the crews and get them ready for competitive racing.

Junior Racing Program

Come race Optimists or RS Feva’s at Middle Harbour Yacht Club / Middle Harbour 16’ Skiff Club

MHYC members and other interested parents, grandparents and guardians are reminded their kids can take part in the joint Middle Harbour Yacht Club and Middle Harbour 16’ Skiff Club fleet racing program, which kicks off this coming Sunday 20th of September.  Late entries are welcome.

We have several options to make it as easy as possible to get your kids into this exciting programme:

Easy lease or outright purchase options for a GRP race-ready Optimist are available through Ezi Opti.  

  •  A sample lease option is availible from Ezi Opti
  • Storage of the boat is able to be done at MHYC for $200 per 6 month season
  • Outright purchase is available from $2995

A further option for older heavier children is to charter one of of two handed RS Feva dinghies for racing – the simple charter fee will be $400 per series, again spring or summer (Currently all leased until Autumn 2010)

Junior membership and Yachting Australia membership is currently $69 per annum and race entry is $20 per series, Spring and Summer.
