Frank Likely Trust Award

Kai Lin is the beneficiary of the Frank Likely Trust award for this year.  Kai Lin has now received $3,000 to assist her in her sailing aspirations.   Kai Lin is currently in Year 11 and sails a Nacra 15 with sailing partner Leo McAllister (last year’s FLT beneficiary) at Middle Harbour Yacht Club. They would really like to keep their boat there, however at the moment there is not enough room.

From the 22nd April to 28th April 2018, she and Leo will be travelling to Barcelona, Spain to compete in the Nacra 15 World Championships. The donation will go towards her costs for the overseas trip, including, travel, boat chartering and coaching.

This regatta is significant to Kai Lin as it will be her first ever international regatta.  Seven years ago, she first started sailing right here at Middle Harbour Yacht Club.  Kai Lin says “Going through the Tackers Program from Tackers 1 all the way to Tackers 3, I developed not only basic skills that still prove useful today but more importantly, I developed a foundational love for sailing. Wanting to pursue my passion for sailing even further, I began sailing International Cadets with the club. This opened me to a new world where recreational sailing and racing were combined, which made me become more passionate with sailing.  I raced on Sundays with the club organised series, ultimately training to compete at the International Cadet Australian Championships at the end of the year, every consecutive year from 2012 to 2016. Competing on Sundays and at Nationals, I fell in love with the nature of sailing as a sport. Because of this, I wanted to find a way to give back to the sport that has already offered me so much.”

One of the stipulations for receiving an award from the Frank Likely Trust is that the nominee must demonstrate how they can pass their knowledge on to others. Kai Lin has already been helping the little tackers get their boats ready and working behind the scenes work, filling up the fuel on the ribs etc. so that the tackers camps could run smoothly the next day. In December, she was a volunteer in the Sail Sydney event. For a week, she helped where she could on the race course, on the start and finish boats, the rescue boats and making sure that no one was in danger when a Sydney Ferry would barge through the middle of a race course. During the event, she also helped as an assistant instructor for the Opti green-fleet, helping them with their racing techniques and teaching them how to become better sailors. Similarly, with the school program here at MHYC, she has also volunteered in the past with assistanting instructing school teenagers on how to sail and how to improve their sailing.

She wants to continue giving back to the sailing community, and to do so by getting children excited about sailing, or to teach them how to become better sailors so that one day, they too can give back to the sailing community.  Her plan is to become an instructor and to also offer her help in Middle Harbour Yacht Club’s Sailability program when she finishes high school.

She says “The Nacra 15 World Championships held in Barcelona is a difficult regatta that my Nacra 15 partner (McAllister) and I have spent many months training for. This year especially, it will be more challenging as there are 7 available spots for countries wanting to qualify for the upcoming Youth Olympics. Competing in this regatta against world-class sailors from England, USA, Canada and many more countries around the world would give me the skills and experience to become a better sailor. But furthermore, it would give me skills and experiences I can then use to teach young sailors and to give back to the sailing community.”

About the Frank Likely Trust

Frank Likely was a pioneer and driving force behind MHYC’s junior sailing and safety programs. Although Frank is no longer with us, his spirit is still alive in the form of the Frank Likely Trust.

This trust was formed by sailing and army mates from the war to:

  1. To perpetuate the memory of Frank Likely in view of his many years of outstanding voluntary service to yachting and Middle Harbour Yacht Club.
  2. To assist Middle Harbour Yacht Club members and young sailors selected at the discretion of the Committee to compete in yacht and dinghy racing.
  3. To make awards to outstanding persons who have contributed valuable services to the Middle Harbour Yacht Club and Australian Yachting in the Frank Likely Spirit.

You can support the Frank Likely Trust by donating to the Frank Likely Trust via Middle Harbour Yacht Club or by supporting this year’s Club Dinner on 16th June 2018. Your contribution is important for attracting young talent and guaranteeing the future of sailing.  It will also make a valuable contribution to Middle Harbour Yacht Club sailing programs.

Thanks

Julie Hodder (Chairperson of the Frank Likely Trust)

Tuesday Member's Shed

Lindsay Rose and his band of merry members, including regulars Richard Hurley and Tony Levitt have been quietly working around the club. They are a multi-skilled bunch and have painted parts of the club, fixed tiles, washed and fixed speakers and veranda curtains, sanded and varnished the Board table, still trying to fix bird problem to mention just a few tasks.

At the moment we are trying to restore the Members room. We have recently purchased 2 grand trophy cabinets, so our trophies can be kept behind glass which will help reduce the maintenance needed and enable us to display many of our archived trophies. We are also putting up the boat models, burgees, making a member Memorabilia cabinet that will hold all our old magasines and sailing handbooks.

If YOU would like to help, please let us know. We meet nearly every Tuesday and there are jobs for all abilities. Mark Bothwell volunteered his much-needed muscle last Tuesday and is happy to do so more regularly. We are also looking for people with skills from painting, washing, polishing, hanging pictures as well more specialised building skills.

It is a fun time, you get to meet other members and you are helping to make the club look nicer.
