E-News 14 December

The festive season is in full swing at your club!

Message from the Commodore

Dear Members,

2017 is fast coming to a close and for MHYC it has been a challenging and eventful year. As a club, we continue to have strong membership growth which is a testament to the Club's offering. We have set many goals for the year and on reflection I believe we have largely met the goals.

Our Junior fleets and Schools Programs are growing and are enthusiastically supported by the parents and schools and their volunteer groups. The Keelboat Racing has been growing and our feature SSORC and SHR regattas were very successful with record fleets, great diversity of boats and new innovations. Our Charity regattas successfully raised money for those less fortunate and it is pleasing to see the support of owners and crew for these events. Our Saturday, Twilight and Wednesday fleets continue to flourish. Our Cruising fleet has grown with the RANSA club now involved with the division. The Frank Likely Trust, our very special foundation, continues to support youth sailing - the essence of our future. I am overwhelmed with the feedback on the improvements in food and beverage in the club, keep supporting us and we will continue to raise the service and quality.

To all our volunteers on all our committees on and off the water, THANK YOU! Without our volunteers we would be lost. We always need more volunteers so if you are interested in volunteering on our committees, the on water teams or the shore based activities, please contact the office.

To our Board, Karen and staff, and the Flag Officers who have worked tirelessly this year thank you so much. The club is truly indebted to you for your time, hard work and enthusiasm. The Clubs financial footing has improved with the hard work of the team and the continued support of our debenture holders.

We are now fast moving into Christmas and the New Year.

To all our Sponsors, we can't thank you all enough for your continued support of the Club's Divisions, activities & events during the year.

To all our members, on behalf of the Club have a very happy Christmas. For those heading to Hobart we wish you every success. The New Year on the Harbour looks like being bigger than ever. For those heading North just after Christmas good luck and fair winds. For those cruising  to Lord Howe Island be safe and enjoy. To all our member's families good health and happy times.

May 2018 be a good year for all. I hope all your New Years resolutions come true. Most importantly though, be safe both on and off the water. I am excited about another challenging and fruitful year ahead for the club. Merry Christmas!

Kind Regards - Peter Lewis

Sail Sydney -16 and 17 December

MHYC will be working with Drummoyne Sailing Club to run the Junior & Youth Classes course area, most likely in the vicinity of Double Bay for the Sail Sydney Regatta.  Classes will include Optimist, Sabot, Open Bic, International Cadet & Manly Junior.  The resources we are providing are Hugh George (Start Boat), Red RHIB (Pin Boat) & Noel Ramsden RHIB (Safety Boat) and we are seeking volunteers to assist.

The event is expected to attract more than 300 local, national and international competitors across 23 classes.

It is anticipated that racing will commence at 11am each day.  Volunteers would need to be at MHYC by 9am.  Two race sessions are planned both days, so teams may not be back at the club until about 6pm.

All volunteers also need to register with Australian Sailing here.

The event website is www.sailsydney.org

Sunday Sounds - Sunday 17 December

Our last Sunday Sounds for the year - and a great way to relax in the busy festive season!  Come down to the beach and grab a cold drink while listening to one of our favourites "Linesey"! Please note all club spaces will be closed from 6pm this Sunday due to the Staff Christmas Party.

Clipper Round the World Race Talk - Wednesday 20 December

The Clipper Race is one of the biggest challenges of the natural world and an endurance test like no other.

Come and hear MHYC Club member and race crew of Galan, Samantha Gallagher, speak about her experiences from 6pm!

With no previous sailing experience necessary, it’s a record breaking 40,000 nautical mile race around the world on a 70-foot ocean racing yacht.

The brainchild of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first person to sail solo non-stop around the world, the event is now on its eleventh edition.

Divided into eight legs and 13 to 16 individual races, you can choose to complete the full circumnavigation or select individual legs. It is the only race in the world where the organisers supply a fleet of twelve identical racing yachts, each with a fully qualified skipper to safely guide the crew.

Normally the domain of seasoned pros, this supreme challenge is taken on by ordinary, everyday people. Having completed a rigorous training course, participants are suited and booted in the latest extreme protection gear to commence the race of their lives - an unparalleled challenge where taxi drivers rub shoulders with chief executives, vicars mix with housewives, students work alongside bankers, and engineers team up with rugby players.

The sea does not distinguish between Olympians or novices. There is nowhere to hide - if Mother Nature throws down the gauntlet, you must be ready to face the same challenges as the pro racer. Navigate the Doldrums en route to South America, endure epic Southern Ocean storms, experience South African sunsets, face the mountainous seas of the North Pacific - and bond with an international crew creating lifelong memories before returning victorious.

Applications are now open for the 2019-20 edition of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. Seize the moment, unleash the adventure.
