E-News 19 October

Another busy week at your club with a full program of racing, regattas, twilights and youth training taking place!

Sydney Short Ocean Racing Championships - entries now open

Celebrating it's 40th Anniversary this year the SSORC championships are hosted by Middle Harbour Yacht Club over the weekend of 25 and 26 November supported by Helly Hansen and Sydney City Marine.

For this year’s edition Saturday will be a competitive Ocean Passage Race. At same time, the fun and challenging Seven Islands Race will be held for inshore yachts with a separate division for the Super 12 and Jeanneau Cup fleets.

MHYC is introducing some innovations for the Sunday racing, replacing the shorter race format with a single Ocean Race using a hybrid course of laid and virtual marks to provide competitive racing for all types of boats.

The 2017 SSORC will also feature as part of the Sydney 38 East Coast Championships and the Farr 40 One Design Series.

The Saturday Passage race also forms part of the Middle Harbour Yacht Club and Cruising Yacht Club of Australia Ocean Pointscore and many yachts will race over both days towards the final trophy.

The Super 12 Fleet will race on Saturday in the Seven Islands Race and on Sunday inshore to compete in the MHYC Super 12 Spring Regatta.

Entries are now open online at www.ssorc.mhyc.com.au

Women's Twilight Series - starts this week

As part of our new program for this year, MHYC is running a Women’s point-score series in conjunction with the regular Thursday Twilight Racing. This point-score will be made up of three races during the spring twilight series (19 Oct, 16 Nov, 14 Dec) and three in the summer series (18 Jan, 15 Feb, 15 March), with prizes for each race sponsored by MySail.

To be eligible, you MUST have a female helmsperson but the rest of the crew can be mixed / male, so your regular twilight crew can still participate.

For yachts already registered in the twilight series there is no additional cost to enter, but you need to complete a seperate TopYacht registration at the link below. If you enter the Women’s event, these races will count towards the normal twilight series in your regular division, but you will also get a result and qualify for prizes in the women’s series giving you more chances to win.

You can complete your entry here: https://www.topyacht.com.au/db/aus/entry_menu.php?EventID=825.

If you have any questions contact Cathy on sailing@mhyc.com.au

MHYC Debenture Offer - now open

We are seeking expressions of interest from members to become new Debenture Holders. The Debenture Program helped finance the marina extension in 2014, and several of those debentures are now maturing. The refinancing of those will be mainly through debenture holders rolling over, but we do need some new debentures as well.

These have attractive interest rates and are a secure investment. This opportunity is open to all members.

Please contact the Treasurer, Neil Padden, 0410418665 or npadden@bigpond.net.au  Expressions of interest close 17 November, 2017.

ASX Thomson Reuters Charity Foundation Regatta

The Financial and Media Markets Charity Regatta will take place on Friday 10 November.  Approx 60 boats will be competing for the Cup and last year's event helped the Foundation distribute over $1.2 million to 27 benefiting charities.

Sportsboat Program

With the sailing season now underway, why not take out one of the best sportsboats around?  We have four Melges 20s available to experienced MHYC members to sail or race on Saturdays.  These boats are privately owned but made available to keen sailors looking to expand their racing skills.  Otherwise, contact Nicky Bethwaite (nickyb@mhyc.com.au) to organise to go for a sail.

Reminder - Safety Audits & Insurance

All yachts racing in MHYC events this season are required to have successfully completed a safety audit for the category of races they are entering and the new Australian Sailing Special Regulations have come in to force as of July 1.  The MHYC Sailing Office will not accept race entries from boats that have not completed their 2017-2018 safety audit and provided evidence of current public liability insurance – these boats will not be included on start lists or eligible for results. To book an audit for your yacht, email sailing.manager@mhyc.com.au or call 9969 1244 to advise the boat name, safety category and preferred day and time.
