Race Management Training - Just Some Fun or a New Vocation?

Week in, week out all Yacht Clubs rely upon their Volunteer Race Management teams to ensure our yacht racing community enjoy the opportunity to participate in professionally run races throughout the year. Our Club is no exception and we have been very well supported over many years by a core team of Member volunteers, supplemented with yacht crews, who are often acknowledged as the “best in the business”.
So, have you thought about adding another skill to your sailing bag? The Club is seeking Expressions of Interest from Members who might wish to embark on the journey of Race Management and join the current team. Whether it’s a regular Saturday point score or a major regatta, you are guaranteed to learn more about the art of yacht racing from a totally different perspective and you will certainly enjoy yourself.

On Water Race Management Assistance Required

MHYC is running Farr 40 Regattas in October, November and December in the build up for the state, national and world championships to be held in early 2016. We will, of course, still be running our regular Saturday sailing program, so as a result we will need more help on-water. Duties include marking off boats competing, helping with flags and signals at the start, and recording finish times. Refreshments and a light lunch are provided and you would need to be here from about 10am to 4pm. There will be experienced race officials on board to guide you, and you will learn some of the intricacies of race management.
If you can help, or know someone reasonably agile who can, please contact the Sailing Office for more details on 9969 1244.
Help is needed especially on Saturdays from 17 October through December, and on Sundays 8 Nov and 13 Dec.

Cadets Making Great Progress

After a highly successful and intensive class training camp over the October long-weekend, the MHYC Cadet class is going from strength to strength. Guided by coaches James Griffin and Grace Stokes, the confidence of the sailors, not to mention their skill levels, is soaring. A record fleet of 15 boats faced the starter in last weekends’ club racing – held out in the area of the Sound where they will be racing the Australian Championships over Christmas-New Year. A fleet of 60-70 boats is expected. Of particular note is the work of the young crews, many still in primary school yet still handling spinnakers with aplomb and keeping their skippers on their toes! The Cadet is an ideal stepping stone from single-handers like the Optimist into multi-crew and multi-sail boats.
