Middle Harbour Yacht Club E-Newsletter

Welcome to Middle Harbour Yacht Club's E-Newsletter. What a wild couple of days!  Thank you to our amazing marina team, and volunteer helpers, working tirelessly over the last 72 hours to secure boats and reduce damage around the Club and marina - it has truly been a fantastic effort.  For some incredible images, visit our Facebook page.
Now that the weather (Seabreeze website) seems to be changing and looks great for Saturday - enter the Anzac Day Two Cup Race - see article below.

Note from Karen Baldwin, General Manager

Whilst many of us look forward to the start of a new year, 2015 has not been too kind so far – first the fire in Cala Luna back in February , and now in April, the 1-in-10 year storm which started on Monday and whipped itself into a frenzy by Tuesday night. As many of you know, the Club issued an emergency email to boat owner members last Friday warning of the pending storm but I don’t think anyone anticipated the ferocity of wind, rain & accompanying storm surges which slammed into our Club over 2 days. Sadly, one visiting yacht was lost and currently sitting underwater on A-arm awaiting insurance assessors, and quite a few other vessels sustained mostly superficial damage in varying levels but all fixable.

Board News

The Club’s Board of Directors wish to advise all MHYC Members that Nigel Smyth who has been your Chairman since 2012 and due to personal circumstances and regular commutes back and forward to the UK, he has resigned as Chairman but will remain on the Board as a Director until the election in July 2015. The Board has unanimously nominated Andrew Hurt, Managing Director of Associated Customs & Forwarding and owner of the yacht “Onya” and cruiser “Cudgegong” – as the new Chairman. As was reported recently, there will be vacancies on the Board for the election this year being held in conjunction with the AGM on Thursday 16th July and any member interested, should contact one of the Directors or the General Manager for more information.

Being on the Board, is an opportunity to be part of the team which continues to help grow and shape the future of our Club.

Spitfire Controls Zenith - Podium at Sail Port Stephens!

Also of note was the fantastic effort of the MHYC 40 .7 , "Spitfire Controls Zenith" Crew (Sporting a new set of Redback Sails ) Zenith powered to a clear win in the first race of the Sail Port Stephens Commodores Cup.
The Round Islands race was mastered by navigator Ian Coleman and expertly helmed by Scott Beach, the MHYC crew gave them a lesson in local waters to win by some 32 seconds.

With the handicap adjusted, three boats jousted for a podium finish and the MHYC crew clawed their way in race 2 & 3 to take a third place overall with Jab taking the honours followed by Arch Rival then Zenith.

Crew boss MHYC's Andrew McLean said "the camaraderie was great and it was great to see the Spitfire Zenith Crew eager for a result in one of their first regattas."

I think the result may have been better had we not run out of tomato juice for the bloody Mary's pre-start ! We had a fantastic time and this is a regatta not to be missed.
