Sydney Short Ocean Racing Championship (SSORC) - Winners decided after winds go on strike

Winners were decided with one final race at Middle Harbour Yacht Club’s Sydney Short Ocean Racing Championship, when the foretold weather did not play ball, forcing Principal Race Officer, Denis Thompson, and his race crews to wait for the north-easterly wind to fill in.

SSORC 7 Islands Race: Rush gets the gun but veterans steal the show

Graham Coffey’s well named Thompson 8, Rush, won Division 1 of Middle Harbour Yacht Club’s Seven Islands Race around Sydney Harbour, but John Walker and Tig Thomas were undoubtedly the star attractions of the pursuit-style race that started off the Club.

Thursday Twilights Report - Race 7

Last Thursday was near pefect weather for twilight sailing. A 15knot Southerly in balmy conditions with a 1 metre swell. 48 boats competed and I predict we will soon have over 50 boats racing across the 6 divisions!

Beach BBQ & Harbourview Bar & Bistro Open for Twilights

The delicious menu offerings for the Twilight Series will again consist of either casual meals from the BBQ ranging in price from $7 to $12, from Beef burger with mixed salad, Lemon & Pepper chicken skewers, Vegetarian Pasta salad, to a Twilight bistro menu in the Harbourview Bar & Bistro.  Bookings are essential for the Bistro. Please call 9969 1244 to book a table.

 


Special Twilight Membership for New Members

MHYC is offering a special Twilight Membership for new members wishing to join the Club for the Twilight season.  The cost is $274.00 (inc YA fee) and expires 31st August 2013.  Conditions apply. Skippers, get your crew for the Twilight season.

Vale Warren Johns

The sailing world is mourning the sad loss of Warren Johns who was a stalwart of the class during the ‘80’s and ‘90’s, representing Australia internationally at many events, including the Kenwood Cup in Hawaii.
Warren, a long-time member of Middle Harbour Yacht Club, turned 78 in November.

Taking on the Mini Transat

However you describe it the Mini Transat is considered one of the most demanding yacht races in the world. In 2013, 80 plus sailors in 21ft (6.5m) yachts will race solo across the Atlantic from Douarnenez, France to the island of Guadeloupe in the Caribbean with a stopover in the Canary Islands. The boats have no luxury’s what so ever; no toilet, no bunk, no galley. Class rules ban the use of computers, including mapping GPS and all communication is done via VHF. With no communication with the outside world and no crewmates to talk to, the mental challenges are as tough as the physical ones. It is reasons like these that make the Mini Transat the ultimate test of a sailor, which is why MHYC member Katrina Ham wants to race it!
